The fewer CO2 emissions made by your vehicle the less your car tax will cost - motors that contaminate the air the least are eligible for the lowest grade, Band A, and automobiles that are known to pollute the most feature in the highest grade, Band M. Road tax does not have to be paid by vehicles in Band A. Many of these are electric cars and do not have to pay out for the London congestion charge. Some Band A cars include the VW Golf Bluemotion, the Audi A3 Start/Stop 99, the Peugeot 207 Economique, Ford Fiesta Edge, Ford Fiesta ECOnetic and the Vauxhall Corsa ecoFlex. Motorists with vehicles in Band M have to pay the highest amounts, which can hit figures of over £400. Six months of road tax can only be bought on cars in Band D and above. Band A to D cars that have been bought brand new this year will have free road tax for 12 months - once this period is completed car owners will have to pay.
